On Monday morning I went to City Hall and took my Oath Of Office to become a member of the Marquette Public Art Commission. I’ve never served in a public office before and I’m so excited to be part of this team. Like many people, I have a low hum of imposter syndrome about various aspects of my personal and professional life and as I held up my right hand and read the words of my oath I had a very strong “I’m a real girl!” moment. If you can relate, I highly recommend seeking out a public service or volunteer opportunity.
Before I was asked to apply, it never would have occurred to me to do so because I never would have dreamed I was qualified. Communities need their people. I have learned from the experience of applying for and being appointed to this position that you don’t have to have reached the pinnacle of success in your field to be welcomed into the work of helping and creating your community. I just had to come forward and express a desire to be useful in the ways I can be. There are people on this commission who have more education and relevant professional experience than me. I’m looking forward to working with and learning from them and trust that by remaining open and willing, I will contribute something valuable.
The city of Marquette is full of beautiful art and there is a lot of momentum to continue adding murals, sculptures, gardens, and other installations in the near future. If you live here, you know this already and I hope you love the art here. If you’re not from Marquette I urge you to visit and take in this beautiful place!
