Tapestries Under Tension are a celebration of my fascination with the tension of trying to catch one’s balance as the forces of time, gravity, and experience act upon a person. Throughout the process of making each of them I feel a sense of teetering and finding my balance and flinging it away again many times over. My practice is attempting to spend just the right amount of time in each of those spaces. By avoiding complete comfort and total chaos, I trust more deeply that I will be able to find my footing when I need it. I hope to bring the collector into a space where they feel and believe in their own resilience when they view these works and as they move into the wider world.

Materials are wool yarn, a significant amount of it hand washed, dyed, and spun by myself, wooden stretcher bars, and brass thumb tacks.

Tools used in the creation of these tapestries are my Grandmother’s 4-harness 56” Macomber floor loom, a warping board, yarn cone winder, boat shuttles, bobbins, an old bobbin winder, wool combs, acid dyes, vinegar, pots, an old wooden spoon, a thermometer, soap, mesh bags, an Ashford Elizabeth ii spinning wheel, a hammer, and my own hands.
